Have you been persuaded to purchase jewelry while on holiday?

Often linked to a package tour, gold manufacturers in popular travel destinations such as Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Cyprus, Crete, Greece, Morocco, and Dubai lure unsuspecting tourists into their workshops...

...to entice them into buying overpriced jewelry – often over a cup of tea. When appraisals are obtained after the trip, many tourists feel cheated.

Tour operators and jewelry manufacturers collaborate.

Caution When Buying Jewelry in Holiday Destinations

Whether in Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Cyprus, Crete, Greece, Morocco, or Dubai: Hand-forged gold or silver jewelry has always been a popular souvenir for tourists. Gemstones and other jewelry items are also offered for sale, with exotic stones like “Zultanite” or “Tanzanite” being particularly popular. However, consumers should exercise caution when purchasing seemingly traditionally crafted jewelry pieces. In collaboration with tour operators, numerous jewelry manufacturers, similar to carpet purchases, have developed methods to “convince” unsuspecting tourists to buy.

Tour operators offer trips to these countries, often as part of particularly affordable and attractive package tours that include day excursions to goldsmiths or jewelers. Tourists find themselves at sales events for supposedly handmade gold jewelry and are often persuaded to buy overpriced souvenirs. Typical dealers of this kind include Perge Jewels, AC Kuyumculuk, ARB Diamond, or Tuğra Jewellery Altınova. A complete list of known jewelry dealers can be found in our dealer directory.

Sales Tactics in Gold Manufacturers: Sophisticated and Aggressive

The process of such sales events always follows a specific pattern. First, tourists are shown the production of hand-forged jewelry. They are allowed to observe the work of goldsmiths and artisans and convince themselves of the seemingly high quality of the bracelets, necklaces, rings, or watches.

However, following the visit to these craft workshops and manufacturers, aggressive sales tactics are employed to persuade travelers to purchase expensive jewelry. Through intrusive methods, tourists quickly feel pressured to buy and agree to a purchase. The price for such goods is high: jewelry purchases in the five-figure range are not uncommon.

Withdrawing from a jewelry purchase.

Withdrawal from the Purchase Agreement / Return of Jewelry from Turkey

However, after returning home, the souvenir from Turkey or other countries often turns out to be a fraud, as the jewelry was purchased at exorbitant prices. The desire to withdraw from the purchase or at least obtain a price reduction then arises.

From Germany, however, it proves challenging for defrauded tourists to assert their claims against the respective jewelry dealers, to exercise their right of withdrawal, to initiate the rescission of the purchase agreement, or to organize the return of the purchased goods. Unaware of their legal situation regarding consumer protection in the respective country, they are at a loss as to what to do with the overpriced jewelry. It is now advisable to engage a consumer law attorney to contest the concluded contract.
